Haven House provides emergency housing and support services for single and two-parent families with children. The shelter helps families who are homeless and prepares them for permanent housing by developing and promoting self-sufficiency, stability, and financial responsibility.
Description:
In addition to housing, residents receive meals, crisis counseling, assistance in goal setting and referral to other agencies as needed.
History:
"Begun in 1983 as the Economic Crisis Center, the shelter was originally created by a group of committed citizens to meet what they believed was a temporary community need. The Lansing area was in the midst of a severe recession, workers were being laid off and jobs were exceedingly scarce. The need has not gone away. In 1988 we moved from a house on M.A.C. Avenue to a larger building where we have room for more people. We can now house up to twenty-eight people or seven families. The shelter is nearly always full. Every day in our community, individual and families are experiencing homelessness and other poverty-related problems." Beverly Wiener, Retired Executive Director
