ARE YOU A SOMEONE EAGER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE GREATER LANSING AREA?
Then consider joining the HAPPENDANCE Board of Directors!
Happendance, Lansing’s 30-year-old professional modern dance company and school is a great place for you to help enhance the quality of life in our community.
Experience on other boards is not necessary, nor is it a requirement that you already be familiar with our activities. Some of our most valuable Board members came to us with nothing more than enthusiasm for the performing arts and a desire for an experience that would make a difference - in their own lives, in our organization, and in the community we serve as a non-profit corporation. Anyone who meets these minimum requirements is welcome to apply, but we are looking especially for candidates with one or more of the following backgrounds, through career, hobbies or volunteerism:
- Business (retail, office, professional, trade, etc.)
- Media/advertising/public relations
- Fund development and finance
- Education (including college/university)
- Leadership and organizational skills
- Supporter of the performing arts
- Writing and/or public speaking skills
- Representation of minority group(s)
The Board may have up to 20 Directors with staggered 2-year terms. A quorum is 50 percent of the current Directors. The Board meets monthly, currently on the second Sunday of each month from 6- 8 p.m. The summer schedule is lighter. Meetings are regularly held at the Happendance School at 3448 Hagadorn in Okemos (southeast corner of Jolly & Hagadorn).
It is expected that each Board member will:
- Attend all Board meetings. If personal or professional commitments prevent your participation, absences shall be reported in advance to the Board President or Executive Director.
- Hold an office OR chair a standing committee OR work with a committee or project.
- Serve on a second committee or project.
- Support the organization financially within personal capability.
- Actively participate in meeting standard Board responsibilities (per Michigan Manual for Non-profit Management): Review and approve plans, contracts, budgets, financial statements; hire and evaluate upper-level staff; address public needs; raise funds; evaluate accomplishments, reward volunteers.
- Receive a Board Handbook, a Board Member Orientation and tour of facilities.
