Second Chance Fund For Animal Welfare
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for cats and dogs in need throughout central Massachusetts by providing affordable spay and neuter services, medical care and support for catastrophic illness and injury, public education and counseling for people facing difficult animal situations.
Description:
Our programs include: *Spay/Neuter services for cats through our "Quick Fix" Clinics and for cats and dogs via a voucher program for qualifying individuals. *Medical care support for pets with catastrophic illness or injury, through "Scratch's Patch Up Fund". *Trap-Neuter-Return support for feral cats *Spay/Neuter Information Days, where we meet & greet the public to share information on the importance of Spay/Neuter for cats and dogs. *Counseling & coaching for the public on difficult animal situations.
History:
Since October 2000, Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare has spayed/neutered over 8,000 animals, including many homeless cats - either feral or abandoned pets. According to the MSPCA survey results published in 2006, 6% of all pet cats are not spayed or neutered. This appears to be a relatively small number, only 6,000 in Worcester County, MA. But once lost or abandoned, these 6% in the home become 66% of all homeless street cats or 50,000-150,000 cats! They breed like crazy for several years before the stress and peril of homelessness sadly overcomes them. Therefore we focus on spaying and neutering as many pet cats as possible to curtail homelessness before it starts. We believe this is the most effective way to end the suffering, by addressing the root cause.

What is your organization trying to change; whose lives; and the impact that you seek? |
 |
Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare seeks to end the overpopulation crisis of homeless cats and dogs through providing affordable spay/neuter services for owners who could not otherwise afford it.
|
What are major challenges/obstacles your organization faces in trying to meet your mission? |
 |
We are in need of volunteers to help us administer our programs as we grow. Volunteer opportunities are available that allow you to work from home, or at a clinic site. We also need veterinarians to volunteer their clinic sites and provide discounted services for pet owners in need.
