Description:
MAB Community Services, formerly The Massachusetts Association for the Blind provides an aray of services to people with all degrees of vision loss. We provide in-home vision rehabilitation skills training, case management and volunteer Services. All or a combination of these programs are designed to promote a better quality of independent living for those with vision loss.
History:
MAB Community Services is 103 years old. We are the oldest social services agency in the US, serving people who are blind. We, like society have evolved to keep up with the changing times. Today we work with people in their own homes so that they can stay as independent as possible and not be forced to move into a more structured facility simply because of their vision loss.

What is your organization trying to change; whose lives; and the impact that you seek? |
Our agency seeks to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
What are major challenges/obstacles your organization faces in trying to meet your mission? |
A significant challenge is helping people cope with a new disability. Learning to adjust to the physical and emotional impact of disability can interfere with the person's ability to learn the skills to do so.
Please describe some of the major accomplishments and successes of your organization. |
People who would otherwise not be able to remain in their own homes because of a loss of vision, are able to stay as independent as they possibly can in the place they want to live. People who once thought that life was "over" because of their disability now see that they can live a good quality of life.
Have partnerships with nonprofit/forprofit/government helped you to advance your mission? |
We partner with other non profit agencies in referring clients to others' services, enabling us to better help our clients. Our agency also receives funding from the Department of Mental Retardation.
