LUK Inc. Mentoring Program matches caring community members with youth in the Central Massachusetts area. Mentors care about helping young people achieve their potential and discover their strengths. By sharing fun activities and exposing a youth to new experiences, a mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the youth to new ideas. It's all about FRIENDSHIP. Mentoring is about being there to listen objectively, help put things in perspective, sharing successes and supporting a youth in tough times. Most of all, mentoring is about positively impacting a young person by developing a long lasting friendship. Who are the Mentees? Youth are referred by guidance counselors in several schools in North Central Massachusetts or by the Department of Children & Families throughout the Central Massachusetts area. Studies have shown mentoring helps youth improve self-esteem, peer relationships and social skills. Youth who have mentors are often motivated to improve grades, school attendance and develop a positive attitude about their education. What it takes to be MENTOR!! Mentors complete a thorough screening process which includes an interview, background and reference checks and mentor training. Mentors must be over the age of 18, commit to mentoring a minimum of one hour per week for one year and have a desire to make a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors agree to maintain ongoing contact with mentoring staff.
