The Big Pals-Little Pals Association of Greater Columbus' mission is to provide a positive role model that will ideally build a relationship that promotes self-confidence, positive relationships with others, and productive Citizenship.

Description:
Big Pals-Little Pals is a mentoring organization that matches adult volunteers ages 17 and up with children ages 6-19 from single parents home in order to provide them an adult friend and role model. A Big Pal is a positive role model, mentor, and friend who provides support, guidance, friendship and understanding to a child from a single parent home. Application and background checks are required.

History:
In 1972, a group of individuals in Columbus met to organize and institute a program much needed in the community. That organization was called Big Brothers. These individuals recognized that fact that boys were growing up in homes without the presence of a father--often lacking the guidance and friendship that can have a profound effect on their behavior. This lack of companionship with a responsible adult male was causing behavioral problems which were being reported with increasing frequency by schools, the courts and churches.

Several years into the program. the original plan of the organization changed to include girls. They recognized the fact the girls had similar problems as boys and yet often have a feeling of aloneness, loneliness, and need someone to talk to. The name was then changed to Big Brother-Big Sister Association of Greater Columbus.

In 1988, the name was changed to Big Pals -Little Pals of Greater Columbus to become a local organization because of the increasing cost to be affiliated to the national organization. Throughout the years of service, the purpose of the organization has stayed the same.
