The mission of the AAC is to saving the lives of abandoned animals.

This is done primarily through our inviting downtown facility where the public can meet and interact with rescued animals while they wait for adoption.

Description:
The AAC enables homeless animals to be seen in a relaxed, downtown location. The Center houses 10-14 dogs and 12-15 cats at a time. This small, intimate environment allows for personal interaction between animals and their prospective adoptive parents, as well as opportunity for staff and volunteers to get to know the animals' individual personalities.

The cats are housed in a free roaming room "Kitty City" and its attached cattery, a fully enclosed outdoor space where they can soak up the sun, enjoy the fresh air, and watch the birds and butterflies that visit the garden next to the cattery.

The dogs roam about the Center and Boutique, nap in the comfortable enclosures of "Dog Town", or romp with friends in the Doggy Courtyard. The dogs stay at the Center only during hours of operation. Every night and during weekends, when the Center is closed, the dogs go home with foster families.

In addition to fostering, the community is invited to become involved in a variety of ways. Volunteer programs include dog walking, caretaking Kitty City, office assistance and driving to name a few possibilities. All volunteers play an essential role in helping these abandoned animals find homes.

All AAC animals are fully vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

The AAC can also assist qualified prospective adopters in their search for a specific breed or type of animal compatible with their lifestyle through networking with other rescue groups and animal welfare organizations.

Last but not least, the AAC is here to educate people on how to stop the killing of adoptable pets. Of the 68 million owned dogs and 73 million owned cats in the US, only 20% have been adopted. Every hour in US shelters 480 adoptable animals are put to death. Together we hope to put an end to the killing of adoptable animals, and envision a future where there are no more homeless pets.

Volunteer Reflections    Post Your Own!

Animal Adoption Center 5 Overall Experience    Experience rating
Deeply fulfilling
I began volunteering at the A.A.C. in 2004 after having recently undergone several deep, personal losses. The A.A.C. had just opened its old location on Pearl Avenue and volunteering seemed a good way to get my mind off myself. Here were all of these orphaned, bewildered animals rescued from high kill shelters, needing homes and lots of TLC. I cleaned at "Kitty City", brushed and visited with cats, fostered cats or dogs from time to time, and walked dogs. I discovered an amazing, caring human community of employees and volunteers. It's great to be around such dedicated people. You get to be proactive - even small things make a big difference. They have so many different volunteer needs to be filled. You may not be able to foster or adopt, due to your housing, or economic situation, or you may not have enough time for a pet. Volunteering can give you a pet connection and the animals benefit too. My housing situation changed and I was able to adopt, so I did. When I look into my pet's beautiful eyes, and think of how narrowly they escaped being euthanized because of this caring and heroic bunch of people, I feel honored to be even a small part of that. and you can too.
