      Volunteer Reflections    Post Your Own!

      5 Overall Experience    Experience rating
      Deeply fulfilling
I began volunteering at the A.A.C. in 2004 after having recently undergone several deep, personal losses. The A.A.C. had just opened its old location on Pearl Avenue and volunteering seemed a good way to get my mind off myself. Here were all of these orphaned, bewildered animals rescued from high kill shelters, needing homes and lots of TLC. I cleaned at "Kitty City", brushed and visited with cats, fostered cats or dogs from time to time, and walked dogs. I discovered an amazing, caring human community of employees and volunteers. It's great to be around such dedicated people. You get to be proactive - even small things make a big difference. They have so many different volunteer needs to be filled. You may not be able to foster or adopt, due to your housing, or economic situation, or you may not have enough time for a pet. Volunteering can give you a pet connection and the animals benefit too. My housing situation changed and I was able to adopt, so I did. When I look into my pet's beautiful eyes, and think of how narrowly they escaped being euthanized because of this caring and heroic bunch of people, I feel honored to be even a small part of that. and you can too.
