Carole Robertson Center for Learning

The Carole Robertson Center for Learning is dedicated to nurturing, supporting, and strengthening family life through quality child, youth, and family development programs. The Center serves Metropolitan Chicago families and facilitates community advocacy on child and family issues.

Description:
The Carole Robertson Center operates three sites in the North Lawndale, Little Village, and Near West Side communities of urban Chicago. Sites are open from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday, with regular Saturday programming. The Center serves more than 700 children, ranging in age from infancy through teenagers, and their families each day. In addition, the Center serves hundreds of adult learners and community program providers. All programs serve multicultural populations and are bilingual in English and Spanish.

History:
The Carole Robertson Center is named in memory of Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, and Denise McNair, the four children who were tragically killed in the 1963 Birmingham church bombing. The agency was founded in 1976 by parents and community residents who rallied to save their local school age program when its sponsoring agency closed. These visionary neighborhood parents created a governance structure, which assured that constituents were the dominant voices in agency management and program development. From its modest beginning, the Center has evolved into a comprehensive family development agency. After two decades of slow growth, the Carole Robertson Center began development of two new family resource centers on Chicago’s west side in 1998. This expansion was complete in 2001, enabling the Center to expand current programs, as well as introduce several new programs. This expansion made it possible for the Center to offer a lifespan of support and education, serving children as young as six weeks old to seniors.
