Description:
Helping Hand is a nonprofit, community-based organization with over 50 years of commitment to helping persons with disabilities achieve their highest level of independence. Our motto, “Service for Life,” is a commitment that we take to heart and apply to every aspect of everything that we do. Helping Hand primarily serves clients living in Chicago’s south and west suburbs.
Current Programs - For children birth to age 21 who exhibit any type of developmental delay (i.e., delayed speech, walking, crawling, eating, fine motor skills, etc.), Helping Hand offers diagnostic, educational, and therapeutic services. For adults, residential opportunities and a variety of vocationally oriented day services are available.
By providing the right kind of supports, and an environment that brings dignity, purpose, and success into their lives, Helping Hand clients flourish and achieve more than they ever thought possible. Helping Hand programs and services are designed to:
 Meet individual needs
 Develop and maintain skills for independent living
 Offer a sense of belonging
 Provide a variety of activities within the working day
 Promote feelings of self-worth
 Enable social, recreational, educational, and spiritual growth
 Exist in the context of daily living
 Encourage creativity, and self-expression
 Share resources with the community
 Establish stability and safety in the living environment

History:
In the early 1950s, there was little help for parents of children with developmental disabilities. In 1955, the Helping Hand School was established to address such needs. We are grateful to the early pioneers, a small group of parents whose dedication and perseverance brought into fruition the extraordinary accomplishments of children and adults with disabilities who participate in the excellent programs and services of Helping Hand.
Children's Services include an outpatient clinic with physical, speech, occupational and developmental therapy, a pre-school preparatory program, early intervention and our new School for Autism.
Adult Services include vocational and employment counseling, job placement, independent living skills, social skills training, counseling, behavioral therapies and physical therapy. We also offer horticulture, cooking, computer training, pet therapy, art, music, and recreation therapy.
Helping Hand owns and operates 11 residential homes and provides transportation services.
SubCon Packing & Assembly, a division of Helping Hand, was established in 1962. Located in LaGrange, men and women with and without disabilities perform various packaging and assembly jobs for local and national companies.
