South Suburban Family Shelter
The mission of South Suburban Family Shelter is to provide comprehensive, coordinated services to families in which domestic violence exists without imposing any one solution.
Description:
South Suburban Family Shelter provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and their families. The services are available in English and Spanish. These services include: a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, transportation, transitional housing, group and individual counseling for adult victims, group and individual counseling for child victims/witnesses, court advocacy in criminal and civil court, medical advocacy, mentoring, budgeting classes, parenting classes, a school-based prevention program, professional education, community outreach, and abuser re-learning groups. All services provided to victims are provided free of charge. South Suburban Family Shelter also provides housing and services for homeless women with children through our Sanctuary Program. SSFS is an approved training site for the 40-Hour Domestic Violence training, and the 20-Hour Partner Abuse Intervention Program. More information about these trainings is on the website at: www.ssfs1.org
History:
South Suburban Family Shelter was formed in 1980 as a direct result of a needs assessment survey that was conducted in the southern suburbs of Chicago. This survey found that there were between 500 and 600 known domestic violence victims and that there were no services available for them.
