Adopt-A-Family at the Holidays

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 7, 2009

While the Settlement serves a diverse range of people from many different countries and faiths, many celebrate Christmas. Emergency Services Program coordinates an Adopt-A-Family program for families participating in Settlement programming. Adopt-A-Family is looking for volunteers that will sponsor a family, purchase or donate needed holiday items, and wrap gifts.

The families we help during the holiday season usually do not have the resources to give their children any presents, to prepare a Christmas dinner, and often to pay their rent or utilities. So, your help will go a long way in spreading some much needed holiday cheer in West Town and Humboldt Park communities.

Holiday events require a special level of attention and care, so the Settlement only accepts only new in-kind donations.

How Adopt-A-Family Works...
• Needy families register with the Settlement throughout the fall, providing us with a list of family members, their gender, ages and interests.
• This information is shared with an individual or group “sponsor” who purchases toys, gifts, clothing, books and small household items, wraps them up, and brings them to the Settlement by December 7.
• Sponsors can specify the size of the family they want to adopt – two, three, five, even ten people – based on their own ability to provide these gifts. Often, groups of friends or co-workers go in together to share the cost and the fun.
• Families come to the Settlement to pick up their gifts and bags of food provided by the Settlement on December 18.
• Settlement staff will take a picture of the parents and send it to you, their sponsor, so you can put a face with the gift. Families are also asked to write a short thank you note.
• Gifts are tax-deductible!
