Northeastern Family Institute, Community Alternatives Program

Using a community based, wrap-around philosophy and the normative approach, we work with children, adolescents and young adults to promote safety, respect and responsibility within their communities. We strive to provide mental health and community inclusion treatment, while stabilizing and supporting their home and educational placements.

Description:
The Community Alternatives Program (CAP) is one of fifteen NFI, VT programs within the state. We are part of a larger agency system called North American Family Institute (NAFI). Our Vermont corporate office is located in South Burlington, where as CAP is located in St. Albans. Within our Vermont programs, we have alternative educational programs, residential group homes, hospital diversion program, family outpatient center, community based/foster care programs, community outreach, social justice, post-adoption and mental health consultation. We strive to provide excellent mental health and community integration treatment to children, adolescents and young adults within Vermont.

1. What target populations does your agency serve?
	The CAP program, a mental health agency, currently serves approximately 14-18 consumers and families at any time. A majority of our consumers are in legal custody of DCF and several are in the custody and care of their parents: pre-adoptive, adoptive, biological and other kinship caretakers. Our consumer's ages typically range from 7 y.o. to 18 y.o. Treatment and participation averages 6 months-3 years. Many of our consumers suffer from Attachment Disorders, Conduct Disorders, Mood and Depressive Disorders, Learning Disabilities and severe Complex Trauma histories. Many of our families participate in a wide range of case management and service coordination, community integration, in-home supports, 24-hour mobile crisis response service, therapeutic foster care, individual and family therapy and therapeutic groups and activities.
