Logo

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those impacted by suicide.

Description:
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Vermont Chapter is the local branch of a national organization. The Vermont chapter is Involved in all aspects of the organizations mission. One of the main missions we are involved in is fund raising. The Vermont Chapter of AFSP uses a walk as it's main fund raising event, this takes place in October annually. Currently AFSP VT is working on starting a new annual event that will take place in the spring. All money that the Vermont chapter raises is sent to the National office. Half of the money is redistributed back to the chapters the rest is used to fund grants and studies for depression and suicide prevention. the money is also used to create educational materials aimed at various groups of the general population. AFSP has videos focused on teens, teachers, college students, medical school students, physicians, amongst others in the works. AFSP uses the resources from the chapters and the National events for a broad range of educational and preventative measures.
AFSP VT also has Survivors of Suicide groups that it facilitates in Middlebury, and South Burlington/Burlington area. This group is aimed at helping people who have lost a loved one to suicide come to grips with the loss and help them heal and move forward with their life after the loss.
AFSP VT also travels around the state at health fairs, as well as visits schools, colleges, and universities, to educate the local population about the dangers of depression and suicide. Outreach is a major goal for the AFSP VT chapter and is looking to improve it's reach with in the state in the short term.
