Green Up's mission is to promote the stewardship of our state's natural landscape and waterways and the livability of our communities by involving people in Green Up Day and raising public awareness about the benefits of a litter-free environment.

Is Green Up a state-funded organization?
No, Green Up is a non-profit organization that receives only ten percent of their operating budget from cities, towns and the state of Vermont. Green Up relies on the generous donations from individuals and businesses to keep the organization going.

When is Green Up Day?
Green Up Day is the first Saturday in May.

When was the first Green Up Day?
The first Green Up Day was April 18, 1970. It was started by Governor Deane C. Davis. In 1979, Green Up became a non-profit organization.

How do the Green Up bags make their way out to the roadsides?
With the help of Vtrans, the bags are distributed to the nine district garages and then out to the towns for distribution in mid-April.

How is Green Up Day organized?
Green Up Day happens all over the state and wouldn't happen without the dedicated help of our coordinators. Each town has a coordinator that volunteers can contact to get their Green Up bags. To find your town's coordinator, go to the volunteer page on our website and click on your county to see your town's information listed.

What else happens on Green Up Day?
Green Up Day is about mainly about picking up litter, but many communities provide refreshments, breakfast, picnic lunch or bbq, dinner and even live music and entertainment. Contact your town coordinator to see what the local traditions may be.

I am a girl or boy scout leader, or other community group leader. How do I get my kids involved in Green Up Day?
Contact your town coordinator for information about the day's events and how your group can make a difference.

I am a teacher. How can my students get involved?
You can have them participate in the annul poster and writing contests. Go to the contests page of our website for contest rules and information. Also, if you are teach children in the K-4 grade range, there is a Green Up Day curriculum on our website. Go to the activities page of our website to download a copy of the curriculum. There is also a drawing and story book called "Living the Green Up Way" that can be downloaded. If you would like print copies of either the curriculum or the drawing and story book, please contact us.

How many people participate in Green Up Day?
Over 15,000 people volunteer annually in picking up litter on Green Up Day. Over 40,000 bags of trash are collected annually.
