The mission of the Mental Health Education Initiative (MHEI) is to promote recovery from mental/emotional disorders by increasing knowledge/awareness about mental disorders and reducing harmful stigma and discrimination in the community.

Description:
The program is primarily a Speakers' Bureau which supplies speakers of several types:
People who are in a high degree of recovery from serious psychiatric conditions, as well as selected family members, friends, and professional service providers.

Generally, other organizations invite us in as presenters. One some occasions, we organize events and invite the public.

We are a group of community volunteers and have one part-time coordinator. We are affiliated, informally, with Fletcher Allen Health Care and Vermont Psychiatric Survivors. HowardCenters' Division of Mental Health & Substance Abuse provides some in-kind (non-monetary) services.

We are 90% volunteer-run with a part-time consultant as coordinator. All of our speakers are volunteers who sometimes receive stipend payments. Other tasks include planning, event coordination, outreach, writing, database management, etc.
