Agency Details:
Vermont Department Of Health, Office Of Local Health
VISION: We will have the nation's premier system of public health, enabling Vermonters to lead healthy lives in healthy communities. MISSION: We will lead our state and communities in the development of systematic approaches to health promotion, safety and disease prevention. We will continuously assess, vigorously pursue and document measurable improvements to the health and safety of Vermont's population. We will succeed through excellence in individual achievement, organizational competence and teamwork within and outside of the Department of Health.
Description:
As the state's lead agency for public health policy and advocacy, we developed a plan known as Healthy Vermonters 2010. It represents the work of dozens of organizations and individuals under the leadership of the Vermont Department of Health, and sets forth specific and measurable objectives to improve health and prevent disease. We extend our reach across Vermont with 12 district offices that provide essential health promotion and disease prevention services. The district offices work in partnership with local health care providers, voluntary agencies, schools, businesses and community organizations. These outreach efforts are necessary for monitoring health needs within Vermont communities, and helps us all work toward solutions. Our reach has also extended nationally. In the 2007 edition of America's Health Rankings our state was named the healthiest in the country. Compared with other states, Vermont excels in a wide range of public health measures. The teen birth rate is low, citizens have good access to primary care physicians, Vermont has the highest rates of childhood immunization, and youth smoking is decreasing. Vermonters are generally healthy thanks in large part to the professionalism and dedication of Vermont's public health workers. In a time of potential catastrophes or major threats, we are prepared to respond to public health emergencies. It may be smallpox, SARS, or another infectious disease, a dirty bomb, or an attack on a water system. Communication planning, practice drills, and collaboration with many Vermont public service agencies assures our ability to effectively assist and protect the public.
