Bike Recycle Vermont
Bike Recycle Vermont's mission is to repair donated bikes and provide these bikes and locks at nominal charge to Vermonters of very little or no means. BRV also provides job skills training for disadvantaged and/or disabled adults and at-risk youth.
Description:
Bike Recycle Vermont started mid July 2004 in response to the transportation needs of newly arrived refugees sponsored by the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. Our project quickly grew to include other very-low income Vermonter. By the end of September 2005, we provided over 300 free bikes plus helmets and locks. We also provide ongoing repairs for eligible participants. We accept good, bad and ugly bikes and we put each bike and/or component to it's highest use. BRV functioned as a 100% volunteer project during it's first year of operation. We have hired a full-time program manager to anchor the bike shop and to provide job skills training to participants. We are also hosting an Americorps/VISTA volunteer, who assists with projects and monitoring of the shop. Volunteers act as co-coordinator, professional and amateur bike mechanics, grant writers, computer programmers, data entry specialist, plumber, etc. In January 2005, BRV became a self-supporting project of Local Motion www.localmotion.org - a 501 -C3 Non Profit bike and pedestrian advocacy organization. In the same month, we moved out of our back yards and into a shop space behind one of our major benefactors - the Good News Garage www.goodnewsgarage.org . The GNG takes car donations and provides them to low income people for the price of any required repairs.
