Volunteer Job Description: • Provide direct support to on-site CHIPS staff during open Teen Center drop-in hours for middle school and high school youth. This may include assisting with snack, organizing/participating in structured activities, supervising/participating in informal activities and assisting with maintenance of the Teen Center space. • Use effective and appropriate language and consistent, respectful discipline techniques to help youth follow the Code of Conduct and maintain appropriate behavior • Report incidents/information of concern or instances of Code of Conduct violations immediately to CHIPS staff on-duty • Provide a fun and safe environment for youth during open drop-in hours in the Teen Center Benefits to Volunteer • Obtain experience working with youth • Develop positive, healthy relationships with youth in the community • “Be a part of something real” and help make a difference in the community by providing a safe environment for youth to be themselves. • It’s FUN! Play pool, ping pong, a board game, video games, share a talent/skill, do arts and crafts, and enjoy the energy and positivity of our youth! Hours and Time • Middle School Drop-In: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 3-6 PM • The Essex Teen Center follows the CCSU school calendar and will be closed on days that CCSU doesn’t have school (including snow days)
Qualifications • Middle School hours: Volunteer must be at least 15 years old • High School hours: Volunteer must be at least 20 years old • Meet with CHIPS staff and complete Volunteer Application/Interview and review Volunteer Handbook prior to beginning service • Volunteer must undergo background check prior to beginning service • No formal experience necessary
This volunteer will serve under the supervision of CHIPS staff on-duty during the after school program, and in collaboration with other CHIPS staff, volunteers, and youth committee members.
