Invasive Species Control
Powered by Truist

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on March 10, 2009

One of Vermont's largest remaining remnants of floodplain forest still thrives in Richmond. However, several species of highly invasive exotic plants are taking over the floodplain, pushing out native plants that are important for erosion control and wildlife while offering few, if any, benefits of their own. The Richmond Land Trust has a new program aimed at stopping the spread of the most aggressive alien species in our riverside nature preserves, and, where practical, replacing them with plants native to that unique habitat. We are also working to inform adjoining landowners of the threat and assist them in restoring native plants on their properties.

Preliminary work generally involves using scythes, machetes and similar tools to cut down stands of Japanese knotweed along the bank of the Winooski River. Volunteers should have the moderate strength to walk up to a half-mile and use those tools. The length of the work sessions is entirely up to our volunteers. Our philosophy is "Many hands make light work -- and a lot of fun."
