Sugar House Raising
Powered by Truist

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on May 13, 2009

The staff and students at Rock Point School are building a timber framed sugar house. On May 30th we will be raising the building by hand and we need help. We want this building to be built in as traditional a way as possible and so we are using people power to raise the walls from flat on the ground to standing up. It will be a fun day with periods of work interspersed with downtime and relaxing with wiffleball and frisbee on our beautiful lakeside property.

All are welcome.

Directions:
From Interstate 89: Take exit 14W (Vermont's only four-leaf-clover interchange) which will place you on Williston Road, heading west towards Burlington. Williston Road will incline upwards to the University of Vermont Campus and turn itself into Main Street. Continue down Main Street into Burlington, heading towards Lake Champlain. You may notice the Champlain College Campus on your left. This part is composed mainly of original buildings converted to college use. At the bottom of Main Street, turn right (north) onto Battery Street. This will take you up the hill past a couple of hotels and St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral (boxy, concrete, very fireproof architecture) to Battery Park on your left. Bear left around the park (bandshell, Native American statue, Burlington Police Station on your left) and the stret bears right, continuing North and calling itself North Avenue. Puzzle at the net intersection how North Avenue and North Street could maintain a right angle intersection and not suffer some sort of compass spat. he second traffic light on North Avenue will be at the top of a small rise. Turn left onto Institute Road (west, towards the lake again), passing through Burlington High School Campus (track on the left, brick buildings on the right). At the bottom of Institute Road turn right through a brick and iron gate. As you drive up the (one-lane two-way) road you will see the school building on the left. Parking is available on your right, just as you pass the school, and then again on the right, just past the Dean of Student's house. Please call 802-863-1104 if these directions have landed you somewhere other than where you want to be.
