The Burlington Emergency Shelter (BES) is a Christian homeless shelter located at 89 North Street, Burlington, VT 05401 in the Old North End. Daily from 7pm to 8am BES accommodates 14 men and 4 women in separate dormitories with free housing and an evening meal. Daily from 7-10pm guests arrive at the Shelter for an evening check-in, dinner and chores. The evening volunteer administers in-take processes for prospective guests, logs in returning guests, receives the evening meal from the donating organization, gathers the guests for "self-serve" buffet-style dinner, says or delegates saying of prayer before the meal and facilitates the post-meal clean-up and Shelter chores performed by the guests.
Looking for caring adults who want to help others. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have well defined ethics and boundaries. Some initial training is necessary. Physical Abilities/Skills Required: Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Seek support and intervention from designed staff and agencies according to protocols. Mental Abilities/Skills Required: Ability to perform a variety of tasks at once. Ability to work in a predominately male fast-paced environment and remain calm. Ability to exercise authority over other people appropriately. Ability to set limits as well as treat Guests fairly and respectfully regardless of any behavioral issues. Ability to make good decisions and exercise sound judgment when necessary.
