Mentor Arts matches artistically inclined youth with creative adults for long-term mentoring relationships based on friendship and a mutual love of the arts. Art can serve as a vehicle to build intimate relationships and to develop self-awareness. Through modeling, children are able to observe and learn life skills. Through encouragement, support and consistency from a caring adult, kids learn to trust others and to believe in themselves. Mentoring helps build self-esteem and over time can help adolescents make safe and healthy choices. A mentor is a caring adult friend who devotes time to a young person. Mentors are not teachers and they aren't substitute parents. Nor is a mentor a disciplinarian or a decision maker for a child. A mentor's main purpose is to help a young person define individual goals and find ways to achieve them. At Mentor Arts, those goals often (but not always) have an artistic dimension. As well as making art together, matches spend there time together in a variety of ways. Recent examples include re-potting plants, swimming at the YMCA, getting a shake, walking along the lake, inventing games and then playing them.
The most important requirement is a desire to commit to working with a young person on a one-to-one basis. There are periodic trainings that each mentor will be asked to attend, as scheduling permits. This opportunity is sponsored by: Burlington City Arts
