Become a Reading Mentor! - One Hour a Week
Powered by Truist

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on August 3, 2009

Do you have an hour a week to read with a child?

Everybody Wins! Vermont is a state-wide non-profit children's mentoring organization. Adults from the community come in to a local elementary school and read books with students one hour a week while school is in session. The ages range between 1st and 5th grades. We have several children on a waiting list for mentors, and not enough volunteers to go around!

The best part about our program is that it's simple... One student, one mentor, only one hour per week. It's a mentoring program, meant to build a child's own desire to read. It's not tutoring, and it's not discipline. It's just a caring adult spending an hour with a child, and it's amazing the effects that such a simple program has. There are no expectations or tests, and it means so much to the students each week to just receive the undivided attention of an adult from the community.

Illiteracy is a real problem in America, and Vermont is no exception. Like most traits, a love of reading and contextual understanding takes root most readily while children are still young. This program is our way of increasing children's prospects for success in school and beyond.

These programs have had wonderful results; we just need more mentors so that we can reach out to more children as soon as possible.

We Need Your Help!

When you read with a child...Everybody Wins!

All new mentors must complete an application and provide references before the mentor begins reading in the program. Volunteers then participate in a brief, 1 hours, orientation to learn more about our program and to gain insight into what they will do with their student on a weekly basis.
