Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on March 10, 2009 |
"Wish granters" are volunteers who work directly with wish children and their families to make wishes come true! The volunteers work in teams of two, to meet with the child and family, and collaborate with a staff member to coordinate the details of the wish. For example, a wish granting team might meet with a 5-year-old girl who says that she wants to see Cinderella in her castle! Once the wish had been approved by the organization and the doctor, the office would set up the travel details, while the wish granters worked on making it fun and exciting! The volunteers might create a "count-down calendar" so that the little girl could mark off each day as the trip gets closer. The volunteers might reserve a limousine ride to and from the airport, or fill a backpack with snacks and games to keep her entertained on the plane trip down to Florida. The wish granters role is to find out what makes the child happy and excited and look for ways to incorporate these into the wish. The wish granters look at ways to make the trip as worry free as possible for the whole family. It's a gratifying and rewarding opportunity to bring joy to a child and family who are facing so many challenges.
Wish granters attend one, full day training before starting to work on their first wish. The trainings are held four times a year and locations around the state. After the first training, wish granters are asked to attend one half-day training annually thereafter. Wish granters must be age 18 or older. They must complete a volunteer application (including three references) and complete a background check form. The background check provided by VT Criminal Information Center provides us with criminal information within the state of Vermont. We usually have the information back in about one week (volunteers must not have committed crimes including violence or theft).
