Last updated on January 14, 2009

Bloomington High School South is looking for adults to serve as science, math, English and social studies tutors during special after-school tutoring sessions at South High School.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The PACE program (Panthers Achieving Credits and Enrichment) is a new after school program at South for students who need additional academic support. Students are required to attend PACE to complete the missing assignments after missing three or more assignments for one class. However, about as many students attend PACE voluntarily because it provides a structured place for them to receive help with coursework.

WHEN:
PACE sessions occur each week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:40 to 4:00 pm in the BHSS library. During each session, BHSS teachers and staff will be on hand to supervise PACE sessions, answer questions, and provide assistance. Volunteers should be willing to commit to volunteering about once per week on a regular basis. However, it is okay to miss a week from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteers should feel comfortable working with high school-aged students and have a sincere desire to help them succeed in their coursework.

Math tutors should be comfortable with algebra and geometry.

Non-math tutors do not need to be highly knowledgeable in their subject because in most cases they will simply be assisting students in comprehending their textbooks, working through assignments, and writing papers.

All volunteers must be willing to go through a limited criminal history check and a brief orientation.
