Take the "40 Days of Peace" Pledge

Dr. King's words and deeds illustrated his commitment to justice, equality, and non-violence.  It is in this spirit that we are promoting 40 Days of Peace, and we urge you to join us!

The 40 Days of Peace begin on Martin Luther King Day, January 19, 2009 and run for six weeks. During 40 Days of Peace, we ask individuals, families, students, community organizations, neighborhoods and law enforcement agencies to promote greater cooperation and to work toward a sustainable reduction in violence in our communities.

In order to observe 40 Days of Peace, we invite you to take the following pledge:

"As an indication of my support for the 40 Days of Peace in my community,
I HEREBY PLEDGE that, during the period from January 19, Martin Luther King Day, until February 27,
I will do my utmost to be a model of ethical behavior, integrity, and good citizenship.
I will treat others with the respect with which I wish to be treated.
I will go out of my way to be kind to others and to contribute in any way
I can to create the "beloved community" envisioned by Dr. King."

There are numerous opportunities to take this pledge.  If you attend the City of Bloomington King Birthday Celebration at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater on Monday, January 19, 2009, beginning at 7 p.m., you will be given the opportunity there.

If you take the pledge at that event, you will receive a wrist band which you can wear during the 40 days as a reminder of your pledge.  The pledge will also be offered at many King holiday service projects, "A Day On! Not A Day Off" and at middle, junior high, and high schools in MonroeCounty.

More information about the 40Days of Peace pledge, including a printable copy of the pledge card, is available at http://bloomington.in.gov/mlk (learn more about the 40 Days of Peace movement at http://www.40daysofpeace.org/)

Thank you for helping us make a more peaceful and just world.
