BoulderReads! is an adult and family literacy program of the Boulder Public Library. Our mission is to help people discover the power and joy of reading.
Description:
Our primary service is to provide free one-on-one tutoring to adults and children who need to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Each year more than 200 literacy volunteers help more than 200 people with their reading and writing. Our learners achieve personal goals as a result, such as getting a better job, passing the citizenship test, passing the driver's license test, being able to read to their children, and learning that reading is fun. In addition, we host GED classes and we are a GED testing site; we partner with the Boulder Valley Family Literacy Program to provide family literacy services; we tutor inmates at the Boulder County Jail; we have a Reading Buddies program for children, and we have a computer lab for our learners. We also host a collection of books written specifically for adult new readers; this collection is available to anyone with a library card. We offer our services through four libraries, one elementary school and the Boulder County Jail.
History:
The program has been in existence since 1986 and has received 17 local, state and national awards for excellence.
