Jackson County Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers

Jackson County Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Inc., an agency founded in the community of faith, involves trained volunteers of all ages who shall pool their energies and talents in the preservation of dignity and maintenance of independent living among Jackson County's health-impaired older adults, persons with disabilities and those having special needs which can be served by the organization.

Description:
Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers is a private, non-profit organization that provides non-professional services, free of charge, to older adults and disabled people in Jackson County, regardless of income, religious belief, or ethnic background. Services are provided by trained volunteers, of all ages, from area congregations, and communities to help improve their quality of life and and help individuals remain independent as long as possible.
Services provided include: Caring companionship, Telephone reassurance, Shopping and errands, Transportation and escorts to appointments and social events, Yard work and minor home repair, Light meal preparation, Respite care and Audio tapes for the visually impaired. We also have special programs to help new mothers, those transitioning from a hospital or nursing home to their home and an elementary based in-school mentor program.

History:
Interfaith began as a vision of a group of people in 1987. A coalition planning committee was formed, grants were received, dedicated individuals attended conferences and non-profit status was obtained. The Interfaith board was organized and the first officers were elected in 1988. In 1989, the Program Director was hired to recruit volunteers, churches, care-receivers and to build community partnerships. Office space has been donated by a local church since its inception. Over the years, Interfaith has grown to include 23 churches and many individuals representing 230 volunteers who provide an average of 600 hours of assistance each month. The majority of it's services today are still provided for older adults but with it's new programs it has become a wonderful community resource. Expanding the mission of Interfaith has provided a broad array of volunteer opportunities.
