Girl Scouting began in the La Crosse area in 1917, only 5 years after Juliette Gordon Low brought her ideas of Girl Scouting to the United States. The first Girl Scout troop in the La Crosse area was started in 1926 by Miss Bertha Shuman. The first camp experience for girls was run by Miss Shuman at Spring Banks near Sparta, Wisconsin. The present camp property, Camp Ehawee, was purchased in 1951. Riverland Council was formed in 1956 with Mrs. Lambert Hansen as president. The Service Center is located in La Crosse and was built in 1980 with a state-of-the-art passive solar design which maximizes winter sun and minimizes summer sun to make the building more efficient in all seasons of the year.
