Serve the Homeless This Summer!

The Atlanta Union Mission is offering a summer volunteer/internship for college students. This position strives to give students hands-on experience in working with the homeless as well as individuals suffering from substance abuse.

This is an unpaid opportunity which commences on June 4 and ends on July 27, anywhere from 2 - 5 days per week.

It will give students real world experience for their career as well as a full understanding of Atlanta's homeless situation. Below is information relating to this rewarding opportunity.

Job Summary: The intern/volunteer reports to the Volunteer Coordinator of Men's Services and works closely with him/her to coordinate and manage volunteer groups, assist in counseling, fundraising, marketing and volunteer programs and activities, assist in social work and perform administrative duties.

Requirements: College student majoring in Marketing, Communications, Social Work, Nonprofit management, Divinity, or related majors; passionate about homeless and substance abuse issues; highly organized, detailed and project focused; strong public speaking and presentation skills; average writing skills; team-oriented and a team builder; self-assured, a good listener, open to feedback and input; ability to be flexible with hours and handle multiple tasks; high level of energy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Development:

  • Assist staff in marketing and fundraising activities that include an ongoing procurement of funds from outside sources and supporters.
  • Oversee summer youth groups that visit the shelter
  • Data entry, including volunteer hours, volunteer and donor management, schedule of activities
  • Assist counselors intake of new clients into program as well as shelter guests; assist social service department in referring clients to other agencies
  • Identify and develop relationships and contacts with potential sponsors, community leaders, civic groups, church leaders, business leaders, and other groups to enhance the mission of The Center.
  • Secure donations, coordinate pick up and delivery of donations
  • Disseminate thank you letters in a timely fashion
  • Maintain communication with existing volunteers and cultivate relationships
