Volunteers Needed for Discovery Program
at Parklane Elementary School

60 volunteers are needed for the 2008-2009
Discovery Program kick-off on September 6.
The Hands On Atlanta Discovery Program is a Saturday morning
tutoring program that offers enrichment activities for children who
want to get ahead. Volunteers assist Pre-K through 5th grade students with reading, math, science and other subjects. Grade Captains and Assistant Grade Captains are needed to plan activities and manage
the classrooms at each tutoring session. Volunteers who speak
Spanish are especially needed.

2008-2009 Parklane Elementary Discovery Schedule:
Discovery will take place from 9:45 a.m.-12:00 noon
on the dates listed below.
September 6, 13 & 27
October 4, 18 & 25
November 8 & 15 (Field Trip TBD)
December 6 & 13
January 17 & 24
February 7, 14 & 28
March 7, 21 & 28 (Field Trip TBD)
April 18 & 25

Volunteer Grade Captain / Assistant Grade Captain
Job Descriptions:
The Grade Captain's role is to make the Discovery session as beneficial
as possible for both students and volunteers. Being a grade captain is a commitment for the school year.
Grade Captain:
- Plans the activities for each Discovery session.
- Determines which children need more help and/or attention
and in which academic areas.
- Helps to foster a core group of "regular" volunteers for your grade.
- Maintains sufficient discipline in the classroom to allow for
a suitable learning environment.
- Assists with field trips.
Assistant Grade Captain:
- Attends a majority of the sessions.
- Helps the Grade Captain carry out the lessons.
- Fills in if the Grade Captain must miss a session.
