Kentwood Police Department
It is the mission of the Kentwood Police Department to assist the community in ensuring the safety, individual rights, and quality of life of all citizens.
Description:
The Volunteers in Police Service is a program of the Kentwood Police Department, Neighborhood Services division. Volunteers perform essential functions in several areas including; handicap parking enforcement, vacation home checks, records bureau, traffic services and an assistant to the volunteer coordinator.
History:
The Kentwood Police Department created and developed the Volunteer Handicap Parking Enforcement Program (VHPEP) during the fall months of 1993. The project was proposed to Mayor Hardiman and the City Commission approved it in September 1993. The department’s Traffic Safety Officer began processing applications on the third Friday of that month. Later a partnership was formed with RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program) of Senior Neighbors, Inc. to recruit volunteers. A 12 hour training session was required and 13 seniors completed the training. On Wednesday November 10, 1993, the first two person team completed their first 4-hour shift on patrol. Now approximately 27 people are volunteers in the program.
