South End Community Outreach Ministries
SECOM’s vision statement is Help for Today, Building Hope for Tomorrow with the overall mission to actively partner with other organizations to reduce poverty and increase the ability of individuals to meet the basic needs of life.
Description:
SECOM serves Kent County’s low income residents through the Food Pantry Program, personal/family development programs and health/fitness education. Although SECOM originated as a shared ministry of four United Methodist churches, and continues to maintain close ties with local United Methodist congregations, SECOM is a nondenominational, faith-based agency. We draw volunteer, in-kind and financial support from many different denominations and other non-religious organizations. SECOM revenue consists of: 34% foundations, 19% United Way, 24% Congregations, 21% Individuals, 2% Miscellaneous and Anonymous. SECOM also depends on the support of its 80+ faithful volunteers as well as in-kind donations of food for the pantry, furnishings, and office supplies and other items.
History:
SECOM began in 1971 as a ministry of four United Methodist churches. Today, it is an ecumenical, faith-based agency led with values that are rooted in Christian faith; we seek to do the work of justice, to show mercy and to walk humbly with God (c.f. Micah 6:8) following the example and command of Jesus Christ.

Overall Experience

It kept me from being depressed, then it led to employment
 |
I volunteered at an agency which had a food pantry and family support programs, first in childcare, then reception and additional clerical. Volunteering helped to keep me from being depressed over my job loss, kept me confident and feeling valued and cheered by being around other positive people. I was able to keep my clerical skills honed, learn more computer funtions, and practice at being a receptionist. People who saw me working at the agency appreciated my skills and personality and hired me as their Administrative Assistant full time. I love helping others every day in this support position. I don't miss my factory job! posted by shareall on October 19, 2007 |
