Description:
CBC utilizes volunteer ombudsmen, or advocates, who commit to visit residents in nursing homes to listen, educate, advocate, and empower residents and their families. They help monitor conditions in the home and agree to a one-year commitment to visit a selected home (or homes) two or three times per month. Trained volunteer advocates are they key to CBC’s program. It is a serious volunteer job that has meaningful effects on the lives of nursing home residents. In many nursing homes the ombudsman is seen as an educational resource for staff as well as residents.
History:
Citizens for Better Care is an independent non-profit consumer advocacy and information agency, started in 1969, for residents of long term care and their support persons. Services include regional ombudsman services in nursing homes, adult foster care, homes for the aged, and licensed “assisted living”; family council development; family support services; elder abuse prevention education; state and federal legislative and policy advocacy; quarterly newsletters; training of long term care professionals; and participation in consumer coalitions.
