Grand Rapids Sister Cities International
The mission of Grand Rapids Sister Cities International is to build relationships between Grand Rapids and its sister cities by promoting understanding and mutual respect through exchanges in culture, art, education, and community and economic development.
Description:
Grand Rapids now has formal sister city relationships with Omihachiman, Japan; Bielsko-Biala, Poland; Perugia, Italy; Ga District, Ghana; and Zapopan, Mexico. We promote Grand Rapids' international connections through various projects that connect Grand Rapids with our sister cities, such as youth exchanges and scholarships, as well as events that highlight the cultural heritage of our sister cities.
History:
GRSCI was incorporated in 1994 as a 501(c)(3) organization to administer the sister cities program on behalf of the City of Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids' first sister city relationship was established in 1986 with Omihachiman, Japan. The organization has continued as an all-volunteer grassroots organization.
