Michigan Alliance For African Women
A community-based organization that enchance the dignity and independence of African refugees and immigrants in Michigan and help them to understand and assimilate into the American culture.
History:
The Michigan Alliance for African Women was formed and registered as a service and educational charitable organization on August 5, 2003. It was started by a group of African women who were interested in welcoming and assisting African refugees with the transition to their new homes and American culture. The group helps new refugee families with transportation to appointments, grocery shopping and completing forms in various offices, as well as teaching them such basic tasks as how to operate the electrical/gas appliances in their homes. After the refugee families become familiar with their new environment, they need education and encouragement to be self-reliant and able to participate fully in the community. MAAW provides continuing support to these families, along with workshops on health issues, such as HIV/AIDS, training for business endeavors and outreach to other refugee organizations.
