Health Intervention Services
Health Intervention Services is a faith-based health clinic serving the uninsured working poor in Grand Rapids. Our vision is to bring hope, encouragement and practical assistance in the name of Jesus to the medically uninsured working poor through the delivery of physical, spiritual, and psycho-social services that strengthen families and individuals towards a life of independence and wellness.
Description:
Health Intervention Services (HIS) is a nonprofit inner-city faith-based health center. HIS serves the working poor who cannot afford medical insurance and do not qualify for assistance. HIS' services include medical care, prenatal care, eye exams, counseling, spiritual care, and Spanish interpretation. Nine staff members along with 35 volunteer physicians and many other volunteers from the community help provide services. Community organizations collaborate with HIS to provide English classes for Spanish speakers, free HIV testing and STD prevention education, MOMS program prenatal education, and social work assistance. HIS receives funding from individual donations, foundations, and organizations. Patients contribute a minimum fee towards their treatment based on their level of income.
History:
Health Intervention Services began in 1998, by an ad-hoc group of physicians who wanted to provide basic medical care to the uninsured population in Grand Rapids. Today, Health Intervention Services sees an average of 450 patient visits per month, and has over 100 volunteer physicians who see patients at H.I.S. or in their own offices.
