Schools Of Hope
Children who don't read will become adults who do not succeed! The Schools of Hope mission is to ensure that children in the Grand Rapids Public Schools have access to caring adults to assist them with reading support and enrichment. The goal of Schools of Hope is that third graders in the Grand Rapids Public Schools will be performing at the same reading level as their counterparts in the Kent Intermediate School District as measured by the MEAP tests.
Description:
Schools of Hope provides trained volunteers for reading intervention in the Grand Rapids Public School district, with a focus on grades 1-3.
The Schools of Hope in-school reading program is in 15 elementary schools. Volunteers spend one half hour per week helping an early elementary student learn to read. All materials and lesson plans are provided. Volunteer times are during the school day. This is a school year program; volunteers do not work during school vacations or the summer. Over 1,200 volunteers are already participating. Our goal is 1,500 volunteers.
All volunteers must attend a mandatory two hour training session and undergo a Michigan State Police background check. Trainings are provided August through March and can be found at www.waybetterunitedway.org
History:
Heart of West Michigan United Way has been a key community resource since 1917.
Schools of Hope grew out of a grassroots community effort to provide direct help to youngsters in the Grand Rapids Public Schools. It was formalized as a partnership between the Heart of West Michigan United Way and the Grand Rapids Public Schools in August of 2001. In our 8th year of this partnership, over 6,000 volunteers representing high school students to senior citizens have participated in Schools of Hope. Over 50 businesses and organizations are currently providing Schools of Hope reading volunteers.
