American Red Cross Of Greater Grand Rapids
This Chapter of the American Red Cross, through services directed and performed by volunteers, seeks to improve the quality of human life by helping people in need prevent, prepare for and manage emergencies and disasters.
Description:
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross movement. The National Red Cross is a non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress, but it is not a government agency. The organization depends on the leadership, involvement, and financial support of volunteers.
History:
The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton, who had cared for the sick ad wounded during the Civil War. Forest fires in northern Michigan in 1881, precipitated the first disaster relief operation of the American Red Cross, as Clara Barton appealed for funds and volunteers to aid the victims. Thirty-six years later, the Red Cross was founded in Kent County, Michigan. In October, 1996, the chapter assumed responsibility for Ionia and Montcalm counties. Barry County Red cross joined the Chapter in February, 1999.
