Our mission is "Increasing the ability of children, youth, adults and families to succeed in a diverse community." The constancy of our commitment to our mission infuses us with a passion to work together, focusing on delivery of intergenerational and multiethnic programs to young children, youth, adults, and families - building community with intentional outreach to families.

Description:
United Methodist Community House provides low-cost, licensed child care to children birth through age 12, youth activities, and senior programs. We are open from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M. Monday through Friday for child care. Preschool children are divided into four age-level classrooms, and elementary children into two. "The Methodist" also provides the child care for Hope Community, a transitional housing program run by the City of Grand Rapids Housing Commission. The senior program provides outreach, assistance and health services to older adults in the community. Senior activities include meals, transportation, medical screening, exercise, advocacy, fellowship, information and referral, field trips, arts and crafts, exercise and special events.
United Methodist Community House offers many outstanding programs to the entire family, programs such as Healthy Marriage Healthy Relationships, Proud Fathers Proud Parents, English as a Second Language, EFF and many more. All of our family development programs are evening hours from 5:30-8:00 pm.

History:
United Methodist Community House began in 1902 as a settlement house on Ellsworth Avenue. It was established by Methodist women from First Methodist Episcopal Church to provide classes for immigrant children. As programming expanded, property was purchased at 314 Wealthy S.E. By 1936, we had a Boy Scout troop and the city's first day care. We moved to 904 Sheldon in the fifties, and by 1972 we had the first senior program in the city. Our current building is twelve years old.
