Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired
To advance the independence of people who are blind or visually impaired and help prevent vision loss through services and education
Description:
We provide services to blind and visually impaired individuals to assist them in remaining independent (i.e., rehabilitation services, orientation and mobility services as well as sell items (talking clocks/watches, etc.) to them from our store. We also have low vision doctors who see individuals in our low vision clinic. These individuals can not be helped with conventional glasses and will more than likely receive prescriptions for magnifying devices, etc,
History:
The Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired was founded in 1913 as the Association for the Blind and for Sight Conservation. The agency was incorporated in 1921. On October 23, 1913, Ms. Roberta Griffin, who was blind herself from an early childhood illness, along with 18 women volunteer workers organized the Association for the Blind and Sight Conservation. By 1914, the membership had grown to 240.
