The mission of Porter Hills Village is to combine a continuum of distinctive living environments with the security of a coordinated system of high quality services designed to meet the health, wellness, comfort, and changing needs of older adults.

Description:
Porter Hills is a continuing care retirement community and offers five distinct levels of care for residents. As the need for additional care arises, a resident may move to an area with an increased level of care.

The Garden Apartments and Towne Homes are for independent living which include social activities.

The Village Center is also for independent living residents including a variety of services like meals, laundry, housekeeping, and social activities.

Catered Living encompasses our assisted living community. Residents live in private apartments that are apart of a household. Each household has a team of Resident Assistants to provide personal care and social activities for the residents.

The Heath and Rehabilitation Center is our twenty-four hour skilled nursing center. A portion of the residents in this community are permanent while others are only in need of short-term nursing care.

Finally, our Harmony Hall community is designed for residents experiencing the early stages of cognitive decline including dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

History:
In 1955, several members of Westminster Presbyterian Church had visions of a church-sponsored retirement community. After fifteen difficult years of planning and working, the dream became a reality.

Porter Hills Village was opened in April of 1970. The name "Porter" was chosen in gratitude of the generous gift of thirty-five acres of land from Don and Ruth Porter. "Hills" describe the gentle rolling setting. And "Village" represents the style of community life.

The idea of building a village to enrich the lives of people who reside there was strongly emphasized. The retirement community includes Towne Homes, Garden Apartments, Village Center, Catered Living, Harmony Hall, and the Health and Rehabilitation Center. The Village also includes barber/beauty shops, library, computer lab, two stores, a cafe, and coffee shop. The Martindill Wellness Center opened in 1999 and includes a pool, Nautilius equipment and fitness classes to enable the residents to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Medical care, nutritious meals, interesting activities and social events also enhance and maintain the quality of the resident's lives.

There are more than four hundred residents at Porter Hills. They come from various religious denominations and many are from outside the Grand Rapids area. Each resident brings his/her own experiences and history, making Porter Hills a diverse community.
