HOSTS at New Branches

We create, with our parents, an innovative and caring learning community that enables all students to become independent thinkers, nonviolent problem solvers and responsible citizens who are ready to contribute to an interdependent world.

Description:
New Branches School is, above all else, a community ... a community of learners, where cooperation and caring are top priorities. Our educational goals include helping students become self-explorers, seekers of knowledge, effective communicators, cooperating group members, contributing - responsible citizens, and future planners. New Branches is fortunate to offer two excellent programs to their students. Bridges and HOSTS help students reach their full potential. HOSTS stands for Help One Student To Succeed. It is a mentoring program for at risk readers. Mentors are needed to volunteer to work with a student for half an hour on reading. Most mentors volunteer to work with two students. Two words from our mentors are fun and easy. As a mentor, you come and have fun working with a student. The lesson plans are made for you. It is very rewarding to hear the growth of a young reader. The program involves students from first through fifth grade. Last year, the HOSTS' students increased their reading levels by a 1.6 grade average. Please make a difference in a child's life. Call and become a mentor at New Branches today.

History:
The New Branches School grew out of a private, non-sectarian school called The Climbing Tree School, which was formed by a small group of parents and teachers who came together with an idea for an innovative type of school. In January of 1994, members of the Climbing Tree community decided to begin working together to form a new charter school. After many months of work on the charter school application and contract, the New Branches' Charter was authorized by Central Michigan University in August, 1994. It was the third school in Michigan to receive a charter and was the first school to be approved by the State of Michigan.
