YWCA West Central Michigan
The YWCA effectively works to address violence against women and children in our community. At the heart of each service is our mission: to empower women, promote diversity, and advocate for justice and equality.
Description:
The YWCA has been a place of healing and renewal for over one hundred years. Thousands turn to the YWCA for help each year. Our services respond to the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. We also offer empowerment programming to help girls realize their potential.
History:
The YWCA of Grand Rapids was established in 1900, in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, to provide housing for the first generation of young women to move on their own to the city in search of work and a new life. The YWCA became a haven for thousands of young women, offering to its boarders a warm place to sleep, rest, and exercise; nutritious communal meals; and the encouragement that they could, in fact, thrive in their new lives. Since that time, the YWCA has renewed itself time and time again in response to the changing needs of women in our community.
