Description:
Lincoln School, located on Lincoln Campus is a center-based special education facility operated by Grand Rapids Public Schools. Lincoln School serves approximately 175 students who are diagnosed as: Moderate Cognitively Impaired, Severely Cognitively Impaired, Severely Multiply Impaired and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students range in age from 5 to 26 years of age. Programming for Lincoln School students is based on individualized curriculum with long and short term goals and objectives for each student. The main focus for students programming is functional academics, in the areas of life skills, pre-vocational and vocational skills, muti-sensory, leisure and recreation, adaptive physical education, a swimming, therapy, library /media, and communication skills. Services include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathologists, psychologist, nursing and social work.

History:
In the early 1940's mentally handicapped children were not accepted in the Grand Rapids Public Schools. In July 1948, 5 parents paid tuition and hired a teacher for their children. That grew to 12 students by September and 25 students by the end of the year. Lincoln School was incorporated in October 1952 as a school for the mentally handicapped . It was named after the U.S. President whose name signified freedom. In the early 1960's the property on Crahen Road was purchased and the original structure was built. The schools operation was turned over to the Grand Rapids Board of Education. The school has continue to grow in size and the number of student served to it's present approximately 175 students.
