St. John's Home - MI - Grand Rapids
St. John's Home is a non-denominational facility devoted to the treatment of abused, neglected and troubled youngsters in an therapeutic home-like setting.
Description:
The focus of St. John's Home is the care and therapeutic treatment of emotionally impaired children and adolescents. Children experience loving relationships and fun eye-opening activities and leave St. John's with a more positive view of the world. St. John's provides residential treatment to abused and neglected boys and girls, ages 6 to 17, who live in six modern homes on our campus. St. John's Home also runs KIDSFIRST, Kent County's emergency shelter care program for children from infancy to 17. This program serves the needs of nearly 600 children each year.
History:
Opening in 1889, St. John's Home served the Grand Rapids community as an "orphan asylum". The home was first run by Catholic Sisters, but from the beginning it served children of all faiths. During the 1950's and 1960's, St. John's gradually shifted its focus from orphans to childhood victims of abuse and neglect. During this same period, St. John's became an independent agency - receiving its last support from the Catholic Diocese during the 1970's. Today St. John's is a private, non-denominational agency.
