Justice for Our Neighbors centers provide immigration legal services to those in need. The services are provided by a staff attorney and are free of charge. The mission of JFON is: (1) Provide high-quality immigration legal services and a warm welcome to our community; and (2) Foster greater cross-cultural community building and deeper moral reflection about the justness of current US immigration policies through education for mission and advocacy.

Description:
JFON serves the greater Grand Rapids community and western Michigan. Immigration services are provided under the direct supervision of our staff immigration attorney at no cost to the client. Immigration services include: Family Petitions, Adjustment of Status, Religions Worker Visas, Naturalization, Self Petition under Violence Against Woment Act, T Visas for Victims of Trafficking, Asylum Applications, Advice and Counsel, Representation in Immigration Court and NACARA. The JFON Clinic sites utilize a broad team of volunteers to staff our offices for monthly clinics. Intake of new clients, typically 6 to 9, are done once a month. Volunteers perform intake interviews, assist with form preparation, and provide hospitality and childcare for our clients at each clinic. Clinics are on Saturday mornings (Sep-Apr) and Thursday evenings (May-August).

Volunteer Opportunities include: volunteer attorney, intake volunteer, translator, hospitality, advocacy and education, general secretarial, and fundraising. Training for intake volunteers is required (approx. 6 hours)and done bi-annually. However, prospective volunteer are invited to attend clinincs and work alongside trained volunteers to experience first-hand.

History:
JFON clinics are operating in 21 sites in 17 states across our nation. The clinics were established by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Each clinic is staffed by volunteers and one supervising attorney. Our clinic is the first in Michigan. We opened our doors in February 2004, and have served over 200 clients. In January 2005, we opened a regional site in Holland, Michigan.
