Mentors needed!~~One on one for a child age 8-17 United Way Partner Agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 8, 2009

Wedgwood is a private, non-profit, Christian agency serving children and families who have difficult family situations to face. Restoring Hope and offering positive role modeling to these children is a privilege that can be life changing for them. Mentoring is a benefit to the child and hopefully to the Mentor. Commitment in the relationship should be 6-9 months and contact with the child 1 hour minimum weekly. Many children have no family involvement.
Mentoring gives a child something to look forward to, knowing that someone cares for the details of their lives. It brings hope and a listening ear for them. This does not require counseling in that they each have a Master's level therapist to deal with deep personal issues. To be a friend who is committed to the relationship, as a friend, is essential to the child.

Volunteers must be age 18. Commitment is 6-9 months, spending one hour weekly with a child. Must have transportation to Wedgwood.
There is orientation and training classes available, with the schedule listed in the quarterly newsletter to Volunteers. One hour interview and tour, screening through child abuse and criminal history registries, 2 personal references and one professional reference is required. Mentoring can be unique for each child and Mentor, together they can decide on activities and time spent together.
