Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on October 22, 2009 |
Shalinda now loves reading because of her Schools of Hope tutor. Once unwilling to try, Shalinda is now eager to read. Her tutor sees constant improvement. Students learn to read in grades 1 - 3 and read to learn in grades 4 and above. Students need to read well to succeed in all other subjects. Because of her Schools of Hope tutor, Shalinda will keep up with her classmates and not fall behind.
Schools of Hope reading tutors work in one of 15 Grand Rapids Public Elementary schools. Each tutor spends 1/2 hour a week helping a 1st - 3rd grade student learn to read. All materials and lesson plans are provided for the tutor. A GRPS staff member is in attendance at all sessions. Volunteer times are available during the school day.
Join the over 1,100 people already working as Schools of Hope volunteers. Over 60 companies and organizations are allowing their employees to participate in the program.
Volunteers must be high school age or above.
All volunteers must complete one two-hour training session. Training sessions are scheduled at convenient times throughout the week. We will train on site at companies who provide at least 10 volunteers.
All volunteers must clear a Michigan State Police criminal background check.

Overall Experience

"My student is writing her own success story, because she has improved in reading and socializing!"
 |
My experience as a Schools of Hope tutor was one of the most joyful, exciting and rewarding I have experienced as a tutor and adult. Week after week I expressed my amazement at my student's progress, and overall improvement in confidence. It didn't matter how my day was going: When I left the school 'I' always felt we both had succeeded at a very important mission. posted by obrien08 on June 23, 2009 |
